Each year the kids dress up a pioneers and have a "land run". Along with the land run comes some very frantic parents scrambling to find a costume. I was not the exception. With all of the gardening and cake making that took place this past weekend, I totally forgot about "Okie Dokie" day until Tuesday. Oh yes, mom had 2 days to come up with something cute and creative.
I have to admit, I think I out did myself this time.
I went to the Goodwill store in town and found a women's shirt that was tan with little red and navy flowers on it. It was half price so I got it for $1.63.
Then I went to another thrift store in hopes of finding a kitchen apron that I could cut to make it smaller to fit her. What I found was WAY better. I got two panel curtains that were navy with little white flowers and a ruffle border. Those were $2.99. I took one panel and cut a ruffle side off of it and hemmed both sides. Then I took the other panel and cut a little square out of it and hemmed up the sides. I then sewed the two of them together, added a ribbon to each side and a loop of ribbon around the neck and she had a cute little bib apron.
Then I took her shirt and cut off the bottom to make it shorter for her. I cut the sleeves off and sewed some of the curtain ruffle around the sleeve.
To top it all off, I made her a little bonnet. I found a tan baby hat for $1.99. I cut 1/4 of the back off of the hat and put some of the blue ruffle around the front of the hat and added ribbon for strings. I had to get a roll of ribbon at Wal-Mart for $1.97.
Isn't she the cutest little pioneer girl? It only cost me $9.15 and took about 1 1/2 hours.
