Kim over at The Inadvertant Farmer has a great contest going on called KinderGARDENS to get kids involved in farming. I can say that I have some very fond memories of gardening with my my grandparents. At the time I didn't like it because it is hard work, but it taught me that food doesn't come from a store and that someone put some hard work into getting it to me. I want to teach my kids the same thing. Anyway, if you are interested, go check her blog out.
So I honestly didn't think that this gardening thing would be this easy. I say that it is easy because I really haven't had to do a whole lot since I take care of most of the inside of the house and Kevin takes care of the outside, but I don't think he has had to do a lot of upkeep on our garden either. I know the initialy tilling of the garden took a lot of effort on his part and I am truely grateful to him for that.
Anyway, here is some of the fruits of our work. I can't wait to cook with these in the next few weeks.
Our baby yellow squash that is about 1.5 inches long
Our cherry tomatos-we also have a few hot house tomatos too
Our little blooms on our green bean plants
The kids have been super excited to help check on the garden each day. I think that they like being able to see that we have veggies growing from things that we planted.

Very cool! I'm with you....I CAN'T WAIT to cook meals straight from our garden!

ReplyDeleteI'm hoping mine grow enough I can cook a meal from them! I think my son's enthusiasm is flagging since they aren't doing much. I hope something happens soon!
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is anything you can do to not have squash coming out of your ears for the rest of the summer! You will be cooking it every day!! My family loves it sauteed in butter over omelets or sauteed in olive oil and sprinkled with parmesan over pasta. Adding onions and fresh garlic is wonderful. We always put zucchini in spaghetti sauce.
ReplyDeleteBut don't forget you can eat them raw as well, just wipe the dirt off on to your shirt and Voila! lunch in the garden!
Eating seasonally is so very healthy!
Where have you all been?
ReplyDeleteSince you have more important things to do than to keep everyone updated on your families lives. (kidding) Hey, since I know you like football, do you and the better half know anything about fantasy football
